When I first moved to Chicago five years ago, I couldn’t believe that there wasn’t a downtown market here. Having moved from Toronto (a city known as being a “mini-Chicago”), I expected that Chicago would have something similar to the St. Lawrence Market. Unfortunately, nil.
Come Wednesday last week, I read in the Tribune that a new market had opened up in the Ogilvy Metra Station featuring a variety of food vendors, and mongers of all sorts! I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t heard about the Chicago French …

First of all, who doesn’t love BYOB? If you’re a bit of a lush like Michelle and I and your dining budget is low for the week, Butterfly Sushi & Thai is an excellent choice for dinner anytime! Up until last year, there were outrageous lines to get into this restaurant any time of the week because of the highly affordable and good quality food – combine that with a no-corkage fee BYOB – this is a Food Whore Jackpot! BS&T recently opened up a second location …

I’m a complete sucker for noodles soups. There’s just something so amazingly comforting about warm soups and filling noodles. Recently I found myself in the Arlington Heights area running and errand and I couldn’t resist making a stop at Mitsuwa Marketplace for some grub. My original intentions were to hit up the sushi stand but somehwere in the back of my brain – I remembered reading about amazing ramen in the food court.
That led me to wandering around the numerous stands wondering which one it was? It definitely …

I had a very special and old friend of mine visit from Toronto – he was once a uber picky eater – turned food porn star! He asked me to pick a time and place and he would be there – just make sure it is exceptional. And boy, did I ever find the place!
Takashi has very quickly made a reputation for himself opening this restaurant about a year ago and has since quickly become the Rick Bayless in a Japanese way. If you’re looking for an …

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always been fascinated by hand-pulled noodles, or “lai mein” in Cantonese. At first, I was mesmerized purely by the chef’s ability to convert a slab of dough into what seemed like millions of strands of noodles by pulling, twisting and stretching. Now as an adult, I’m still fixated by the method of hand making noodles but more about the taste and texture of these noodles more than anything else.
Anyone who reads my blogs knows how picky I am about …

I’ve been on an Asian kick lately. All my cravings have been for Asian food! I’ve read all the hype surrounding Urban Belly, the tiny noodle & dumpling spot located in a strip mall on California. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to try it!
The place is very small, with only a few communal tables. On Fridays and Saturdays, there is usually a line out the door. Since it was a Friday night, Mr. Man and I decided to carry out. Once Mr. Man fought his way through the crowd …

I wish that Sanook was fantastic, because it is sorely needed in this neighborhood! There are very few Asian options in this area, aside from a couple greasy Chinese places.
I’ve tried the food from Sanook twice now. The first time, Mr. Man stopped in to pick up sushi for dinner. We tried 2 of the specialty maki, because the specialties should be the best, right? We tried the big ben maki and the father & 2 sons maki. Both pretty good. I think I liked the father & …

It’s unfortunate: I cannot, for the life of me, find the proper “Dan Dan” noodles in Chicago. This Shanghainese favorite dish is just a giant oily mess in this city rather than the milky, salty, peanutty flavor as it should be. The noodles were all wrong too! They used flat egg noodles rather than rice flour noodles. I was SO hopeful to find it at Double Li – but they too failed me!
What didn’t disappoint though, were the tasty Szechuan dumplings on the appetizer menu. …

It’s been 3 months since my last encounter with Thai food, primarily due to the fact that I ate Thai every day while in Koh Samui and needed a much deserved break from cuisine from this part of the world – despite my love for it!
First of all, I couldn’t believe how difficult it was to spend $100.00 here – it’s located in a hot downtown area and offers a cute and cozy atmosphere. Great spot for a dinner and a movie (about 5 mins from AMC River East).
My …
