FIRST BITES BASH! CHICAGO’S CULINARY ELITE SERVE UP SWEET AND SAVORY TASTINGS AT THE OFFICIAL KICK-OFF TO CHICAGO RESTAURANT WEEK !!

Stephanie Izard, David Burke, Tony Mantuano (Spiaggia), Tony Priolo (Piccolo Sogno), Mayor Emanuel and many other prominent culinary figures were on hand at The Great Hall – Union Station to support the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The Chicago Restaurant Week kick-off event, produced by the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau, featured more than 50 of the 230+ restaurants participating in Restaurant Week.
Upon walking in, my goal was to try everything. It soon became apparent, given the sheer number of tantalizing Resto Week teasers being offered, in addition to the density ...

World’s Best Monte Cristo? – Brunch at The Publican

I can’t believe this place is still a hot spot. It just means one thing – it’s good and worthy of sticking around Chicago’s competitive restaurant scene! I remember coming here a couple of years back when it first opened and thought the communal tables and their Belgian beer selection was the coolest thing – It still, kinda is! I mean, libations list is still fantastic but I think I am over the communal tables. Could just be a sign of me getting old. Or that maybe this just isn’t ...

Next – Childhood

Few things in life which are presented with so much fanfare actually live-up to said fanfare. It is not rare to find amazing food in Chicago, but amazing food which evolves not only with each course, but with each bite, which is so much fun to eat makes for a truly rare experience which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for creativity, unpredictability, and, above all, fun in a fine dining experience. The staff was great: from the dry, reserved humor of the waiter who brought us the hamburger and answered “It’s a bun“ when asked what the “bun“ was made of to the encyclopedia of knowledge which accompanied each wine pairing, the service seemed tailored to our interest level. If we engaged and asked questions about the food or wine the staff was helpful and knowledgeable. For the courses for which we needed little explanation and just wanted to get started with, they kept it brief and walked away. Overall, I would describe the service as attentive without being overbearing or stuffy. I found it to be a relatively laid-back atmosphere overall. Also of note is that for each pairing, the bottle is left at your table during the courses to which it is paired. This doesn’t hurt the fun factor either. The table next to us took full advantage of this and spilled as much as they drank. This provided more than ample entertainment between courses, as if smoking logs and flaming potatoes weren’t enough. I can’t wait for the next menu... the kitchen staff will spend their holdays in Spain training for elBulli which opens in January. I’d better start trying to get tickets now.

4th Annual Chicago Gourmet – Mmm..Mmm…perfect!

This year’s Chicago Gourmet (at least on Saturday) was PERFECT! Even though I am pregnant and could not partake in the all-you-can imbibe benefits of the event, this year my husband was able to make it and I think he drank enough scotch to cover my share of drinking. If you’re not familiar with the drink selection at Chicago Gourmet, you’ll find many great wine companies serving bottles that normally retail $30 and up. You usually never get a bad glass of wine. There are also lots of cocktail selections, ...

SweeTango Apples are in Season!

You’ve probably never heard of these because they are NEW apples! They first hit the store in limited quantities in 2009 but are now just about in full production. Get them now while they are in season! These early season apples are a hybrid between the puckery Zestar and the crunchy Honeycrisp that are popular in stores in the fall.
I was lucky enough to receive two sample apples in the mail courtesy of the marketing team so that I could taste what the fuss is about! I have never tried a “new” fruit like ...
